Hi Nev,

Why not build a Doodle Bug? That way if you hit the ground during the first flight, no one can say it wasn't intended

On a slightly more serious note, the Heinkel He162 Salamander would make a good scale model to start with. No enclosed Jet engine to burn up all your hard work!

As to the F86 kit, i'm afraid i don't know who made it.. someone will remember. It's probably an American kit from some time ago.

My Phire Phart is really easy to fly now so the offer still stands if you would like to have a go with a Jet
Hello,
I have been trying to fly a vintage stunt Moitle with a Rustler Frog 500 on spark ignition. My main problem is getting the engine to start on spark. (it runs fine as a glow). The plug seems to oil up almost instantly and drowns the spark. I am using a transistor system and normal glow fuel. I must admit I have not tried petrol yet as I was advised that glow fuel would be fine and might even give more power. I would be grateful if you could give any advice on spark gap and timing settings etc.
Hi Guys,
A couple of years ago [ might have been 3 ?]at the Nat's, someone bought a stamped metal kit of a C/L Sabre, for use with a Dynajet..... I saw it disapearing out of the hangar during the swapmeet.......... was it anyone on this Forum, did it ever get used... if not, is it up for sale ?
I have a Dynajet I want to fly, but not as quickly as Richard [Hellrazor ] does, so a scale model would be a laugh ?
Any leads ?
Cheers,
Nev.
Totally agreed.
The move to 2 stroke and staying there is usually down to the motor getting very hot.
In addition to the increase in oil content another thing to look at is the cowl opening size and just as important the exit. Make sure that there is adequate air passing over the motor by making the air inlet/outlets as large as you can without spoiling appearance.

An OS 46LA was known to runaway after about 100 flights. The fuel used
consistently was 10Nitro, 23 Total Oil 11.5% Castor, 11.5% Synthetic. I exchanged the fuel used immediately to allay complaints in that direction. Noticing that there were significant oil deposits building, the owner as questioned. He hadn't cleaned the engine since installing it from new and had 'adjusted' the compression in the head (forget precisely what was done) to raise it a little.

I do believe a number of things combine together to cause runaways but the main initiator I think is heat buildup or corrollary - lack of cooling. I have seen engines tamed by adding more shims to reduce compression and switching props to change the load etc then even monkeying with the fuel at times.

It is perhaps key to accurately diagnose what's going on with a runaway if you keep a log of how the engine runs over time i.e.: since new.
My money's on lack of cooling and internal tolerances being changed by gunk buildup.
_________________
Per Ardua disAstra

My G51 CL version initially had a very bad "run away" when it broke into a 2 stroke and would take about 2 laps to finally settle back into a 4 stroke. I played with every variable for about a month before I accidentally found the problem. One day I ran out of my usual true FAI fuel so as a last flight for the day I filled with some 75/25 fuel I happened to have with me. It held a powerful growling 4 stroke the entire flight and I've never touched it since. The light dawned on me quite some time later. The engine is extremely economical and 20% oil didn't give enough flow of oil through it so it was overheating.

RC style porting though is a different animal because their torque curve peaks at much higher revs than is usual for CL stunt engines. If they pick up some revs by leaning out a little (or breaking into a 2 stroke) they develop more torque which allows them to gain more revs which lets them develop more torque which....
I suppose realy the starting point is the handle and below is mine, designed by me it is fully ajustable in flight for line length and line spacing but CofG must be in the correct place on the model to start with.

A good full fuselage model to start on would be the Randy Smith Vector and from that move to the SV 11/12.
Just my humble opinion.
I flew one of Jim's Stiletto 500's with a Merco 35 in it in competition and a comment from one of Britain's top flyers was quote "i didn't think that was a competitive model but you have just proved that theory wrong".

I don't know about the `Too much oil" theory. How much is too much? The recommended level for the eternal Fox .35 stunt engine is 29% and they don't often run away unless they are brand new and seriously overheat.
Overheating is one reason that run away occurs. And of course, there are some engines that in standard form just want to go like hell no matter how rich you set them. Many of the OS .15s exhibit this characteristic.
It has been said that if the difference in blowdown between exhaust and bypass timings is too great, run away to full revs just happens. If you want to use an engine like that, you just have to live with it and let it rev and adjust the prop pitch and size to give you the speed you want.
_________________
Charlie Stone (The West Australian one)
Hi

Don't get excited, its the BMFA stand I'll be helping with - but of course if you guys want to buy some Dart kits to "play" with for the evening hangar sessions?

Logistics currently are outrageous - dining table covered in what may become a Warlord, car in garage (rear suspension u/s), caravan to collect this evening (!), working Thursday/Friday in Sheffield.

At this rate I'll be the one with a bicycle sleeping in a pup tent!

Posted: Tue Aug 19, 2008 9:45 am (GMT 0)

Greetings from a damp Charente. Why do some engines 'run away '.

I expect most of you out there know why , but to a recent 'returnee' to C/L Stunt it's a real bugbear !

I recently had a note from someone I really respect in C/L who answered the question for me like this :

It could be too much oil !
The plug fouls up .... We needle - in ..... less fuel in total is flowing through the engine therefore more heat generated ......engine 'overheats' a tad ..... voila we've a 'runaway' !

We should resist overpropping as well.

Your comments / recommendations would be appreciated.

It may well come to that!

I'll be in a caravan probably the other side of the peri track, heading towards the control line nets.

Got the leading and trailing edges joined by the root and tip ribs, fill fit the rest this evening and start work on the engine pod while they dry.

I suspect I'm going to have to make a "Warlord" label up for this, or nobody is going to recognise what its supposed to be!
Hi Candoo
I really wasn't trying to start a pithing contest, I was honestly after some constructive advice. Your reply is hardly very constructive or helpful.

I know as most do that the power from any engine has to start with a good piston liner fit; you got to work very hard to make a contra piston loose in after only an hour or two of running regardless of how its used or abused and this one certainly ain't been abused, neglect maybe! but not on this side of the planet

Please consider this; A guy in our club has paid good money for an engine that just will not perform. He's not an engine expert, but non the less he paid good honest money for something that has never performed to advertised performance levels.
Now there is something very wrong with that, very wrong!

He has spoken to other club members and has found that to send an engine back to PAW is fraught with hidden costs and more disappointment plus the burden of VAT and mail costs in both directions and no guarantee of any performance gain at all.

All I am trying to do is help, I am trying to get the engine to perform to at least a modest level that is better than his plain bearing PAW's.

I have made a list of the problems I've encountered with this engine so far, they are not fabrications, they are manufacturing and inspection shortcomings that shouldn't have left the factory in my opinion.

Hi Ian
Thanks for the link to the earlier topic, I wasn't a member here when that one started. I did do a search prior to posting "PAW tunning" but it didn't turn up anything useful hence the post, this is obviously a continuing problem for PAW having read the link http://controlline.org.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1011

I had a very helpful PM from Mike Crossman with some very sensible advice. Thanks Mike

I'm done with this topic unless anyone has some proven performance tips for the TBR-2 and GTS engines 2.5 cc engines.

Thanks for your help guys
Cheers John
